Very intriguing photography by the talented Nick Brandt. The story behind the photography is even more intriguing. A deadly alkaline lake in Africa turns these animals into calcified statues. No one knows exactly how they die, but it's thought that the reflective nature of the lake's surface confuses them and like a bird crashing into a plate glass window, they crash into the lake.
